About the Author

Panger Imchen, born in 1958, hails from Mangmetong village in Mokokchung District of Nagaland. He got his Bachelor Degrees (B.Th. 1978 and B.D. 1980) from Serampore University and Masters Degree (M.Th. 1987 from SAIACS-ATA, Bangalore). After graduation, he started his career as a lecturer in Clark Theological College, Aolijen (1980-84) and served as Registrar in Discipleship Bible College, Dimapur for a few years. He also worked as the Director of Research and Documentation Centre, Naga Scholars Society, Dimapur. He was a radical thinker-writer and a committed social reformer. As an active researcher, he was an excellent biographer and an ethnographer.

The need for the second edition of the Ancient Ao Naga Religion and Culture is found to be necessary because of the originality of the research and the primary resources that the author, Panger Imchen, has referred to. Many of the works on the past of the Ao Naga continue to rely on ethnographic works of the British administrators which are imbued with ethnocentric thinking and binarism of the self and other. However, Imchen's work is one of the pioneering work done by someone from the Ao Naga community, from the perspective of the community; a story of the underside.

Imchen's work was done in the early nineties, during the time when gender sensitivity in academic writing was not popular. Therefore, his language, as was the trend then is embedded in patriarchal language and traditionalist approach. However, what stands out in his work is his persuasive argument about the Ao lifestyle and how the critical use of it can continue to further the growth of the community life of the Ao Nagas.
