According to Dr. Temsula Ao, "what this small collection does is to emphasize the poet's longing to understand the variegated strands of thinking of her ancestors and the cultural traits that they have passed on to her. Such an inheritance is not a light burden, especially for her generation. It is also, one believes, her effort to retrieve what little remains of the oral tradition of her own people because as she says in the introduction, documenting them has become imperative as they are in danger of being lost with the passage of time. So much has already been lost and there are only a handful of people who still sing or narrate them."
