Tillich’s greatest contribution to philosophy of religion is his fresh thinking on the concept of religion itself. As though he were a master painter, he pictured religion on the broad canvas of the spirit of man, advocating the thesis that man’s religiosity cannot be understood, if it is looked upon merely as an activity to which man can choose or choose not to attend. It is rather something given to man qua man. Religiosity is not a phase in the evolutionary development of human civilization as propagated by some social scientists engaged in the study of religion. It is not what is imposed upon man from the outside, but what emanates from within.
