INTRODUCTION
In recent years, there has been an outburst of creative writing among the Nagas. Our writers have taken to writing with great flair and it is encouraging to see many creative writings of different genres increasingly being published. Writing is a very important creative activity which reflects the current thoughts and beliefs of a society. It encapsulates contemporary experiences and immortalizes them fro the future. We are inspired and grateful to the many talented writers and poets among us who have beautifully captured the life of our times through their creative expressions.
Among our Naga writers, Easterine Kire, Temsula Ao, Nini Lungaland and Monalisa Chankija have contributed much to Naga literature in English, and they have even achieved national and international recognition. They are now considered among the important contemporary voices in literature to have emerged from the Northeast. Their works are being studied by research scholars and have also been included in the academic curricula of different universities in India. Nagaland University has also introduced 'Writing in English from Nagaland' as part of the BA English Honours course. However, it is observed that secondary reference materials by Naga scholars on our literature are hard to come by
Critical works are a must in order to enrich and nurture our literature so that it will grow and develop to greater heights. It was Matthew Arnold who in his essay " The Function of Criticism at the Present Time" stated that critical activity must go hand in hand with creative activity. He elucidates his argument very effectively by citing instances about the great literary epochs in English that were strengthened through critical debates.
"These essays bring the best perspective to bear upon Naga literary works. It is the insider's perspective, the voice of the participant of the same culture, a voice rich with intimate knowledge of the land and its people, free of condescending approaches and, just as importantly, well-versed in the many subtle nuances of indigenous literature."
- Dr. Easterine Kire
"Insider Perspectives: Critical Essays on Literature from Nagaland, a collection of essays by Dr.Vizovono Elizabeth and Dr. Sentinaro Tsuren, brings out their insights and critical reflection on the contemporary Naga Writers. The compendium of essays is an excellent contribution to the scanty critical materials available in the genre to research scholars and students."
- Fr. Dr. AJ Sebastian sdb, Professor (rtd) & Former HoD English, Nagaland Central University
